Boards that have been extended once too often

Like much of the countryside north east of Lewes, Whitesmith has homes ranging from older cottages to later twentieth century houses, many altered and enlarged over the years. Each change tends to bring its own fix: a spur here, a separate fused switch there, sometimes a second small board in a utility room. In time the installation becomes hard to follow and harder to isolate safely.

Part of every board change is untangling that history. We trace each circuit back to its source, bring scattered fuses into one consumer unit where it makes sense, and label everything in plain language, so you know which switch does what the next time something trips.

  • Scattered fused spurs rationalised
  • Second boards brought together
  • Plain-language circuit labels
  • Full test of every circuit

Safe power for garden rooms and workshops

Plenty of rural homes now have a garden office, studio or workshop, and the power to it is not always as well planned as the building. A supply run through an extension lead, or taken from a socket circuit in unsuitable cable, can overheat, or leave a metal-clad building unsafe if a fault develops. A new consumer unit is a good moment to set it right.

We give an outbuilding its own protected circuit at the house, check the cable size and how it is buried or fixed, and fit a small board at the far end where one is needed. Earthing for detached buildings needs care, so we test it properly and explain the result.

  • Dedicated circuit for the garden room
  • Buried cable route checked
  • Small board at the outbuilding
  • Earthing tested and explained
Getting to you

From Brighton & Hove to Whitesmith

From Brighton we normally travel out by way of Lewes, rather than going round through Hailsham. Once your board photos reach us, they come back as a fixed price with a choice of dates for the work. Should a fault cut your power, give us a ring; attending that day, wherever possible, is the aim.

Whitesmith questions

Still not sure?

Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.

Call 0333 360 8691

Usually, yes. It needs its own suitably protected circuit and a cable sized for the distance and the load, and many outbuildings benefit from a small board of their own. We ask what you plan to run out there, from a heater to computers or power tools, and design the supply to match, with the price fixed before we start.

Not necessarily. Sometimes the second unit feeds a single later addition and can be brought into one new consumer unit; sometimes it serves a separate building and is better kept and upgraded. We trace what each one supplies before advising, and the fixed quote states exactly which boards will be replaced.

Keep the Electrical Installation Certificate, which we email within 48 hours with the test results for every circuit. Part P notification of the work to Building Control means a Building Regulations compliance certificate follows separately. Both are worth filing with your house documents, as a buyer's solicitor will ask for them when you come to sell.
