Old High Street, newer estates

Uckfield's older housing is concentrated around the High Street and the streets near the station, with Victorian and Edwardian terraces and villas. The town spread through the twentieth century with estates of semis and detached houses, and in recent years large developments have been built on its edges, including around Ridgewood. Each phase of building tends to bring a different type of board.

Homes built in the last ten to fifteen years usually have a modern board, but often a split-load design rather than RCBOs. Older properties may still have rewirable fuses. For new loads like an EV charger, what matters is spare capacity, space in the board and the right protection, which we check first.

Letting in Uckfield

Commuter lets on the Uckfield line

The railway to London via Oxted makes Uckfield a commuter town, and that supports a steady rental market of family houses, newer flats and terraces close to the station. Many tenants work in London, Tunbridge Wells or Brighton and need homes that simply work, so a tripping board is more than an inconvenience for a household out at work all day.

Landlords here need an EICR at least every five years. We carry out standalone EICRs from £175 to £350 and add one to any board change for £99. Newer rental homes often pass without trouble, while older terraces may need the board replaced to clear a C2 code before the next tenancy begins.

Getting the board ready for new loads

On Uckfield's newer estates, private driveways and modern insulation make EV chargers and air source heat pumps a natural next step, and plenty of owners are looking at solar panels and batteries too. Each of these needs its own dedicated circuit, and the consumer unit needs a free way for it, the right type of protection and enough capacity on the incoming supply.

We can fit a new board with spare ways sized for what you plan to add, and check the main fuse and earthing so the charger or heat pump installer has a clean starting point. If the supply itself needs upgrading, that is arranged through UK Power Networks, and we can tell you what to ask for.

  • Spare ways for EV chargers
  • Heat pump circuits planned
  • Solar and battery ready
  • Main fuse size checked
  • Earthing confirmed
  • RCBO boards from £625
Getting to you

Reaching Uckfield

Uckfield is north east of Brighton, reached through Lewes and up the A26, and it is well within our regular area. If your board has failed, smells of burning or keeps tripping, ring us between 8am and 8pm, seven days a week, and we will aim to be with you the same day where possible. We make the installation safe first and then explain your options.

Planned board changes are booked for a day that suits you. In a typical family home the work takes 4 to 6 hours, with the power off for part of that time and every circuit tested and labelled before we leave.

Many recent homes already have a reasonable board, so you may not. Where we do suggest a change, it is usually because you want to add an EV charger or heat pump and there is no space, or because the board is a split-load design and you would prefer RCBOs so one fault does not knock out half the house. Send a photo and we will give you an honest answer.

It is one part of it. The charger needs its own circuit, a spare way in the board with suitable protection, and enough capacity on your incoming supply. We fit the board with that in mind and check the main fuse and earthing. If your supply needs upgrading, the request goes to UK Power Networks, and the charger installer can then connect to a board that is ready.

It can. Properties fed by overhead lines in the countryside around Uckfield often use a TT earthing system, relying on an earth rod at the property rather than an earth from the network. We test the rod as part of the job and make sure the new board has the RCD protection a TT system depends on. If the rod is not good enough, we tell you before going further.

Arc fault detection devices are recommended by the wiring regulations in certain situations and are a sensible extra in many homes, particularly where the construction is timber framed. Our RCBO and AFDD boards cost £1,095 for 10 ways and £1,295 for 14 ways. We are happy to explain the difference against a standard RCBO board before you decide.

Yes. All the TN22 villages are covered, including Maresfield, Buxted, Framfield, Isfield, Nutley and Hadlow Down. Village homes range from older cottages to modern houses, so we confirm the board type and earthing from your photo and price accordingly. The fixed prices are the same in the villages as in the town.
