Roman villa village under the Downs

Fuse Box Replacement in Bignor

Best known for its Roman villa, Bignor is a village and parish in its own right, lying at the foot of the South Downs to the south of Petworth. Old fuse boxes in the village are swapped for a set price, with care taken around the older fabric and every circuit tested before we go.

Old frames, thick walls and where the cables run

Bignor's older homes include traditional cottages, some of which may be listed, alongside a smaller number of later houses. In buildings like these the fuse box often sits wherever the first electrician found room: inside a cupboard, under a stair or in a back porch. Wiring has usually been added in stages, so one board can be feeding circuits of very different ages.

We take that into account before anything is touched. A board can usually go back in the same position, which avoids chasing new cable routes through old walls. Where a move is sensible, relocation adds £250 to the board price, and we talk through the route with you first rather than lifting floors or cutting plaster on the day.

  • Board kept in its existing spot where possible
  • No surprise chasing into old walls
  • Mixed age circuits tested one by one
  • Relocation priced up front at £250

Changing a board in a listed cottage

A like for like consumer unit swap rarely touches the historic fabric of a house, and in most listed homes it is a straightforward electrical job. What needs more thought is anything that does change the fabric: new cable runs, a board in a different place, visible trunking or fixings into old timber and plaster. If your home is listed, tell us when you send the photos.

We can then plan the work to reuse existing cable routes, keep fixings to a minimum and leave surfaces as we found them. Bignor lies inside the South Downs National Park, so if a change might need listed building consent, we say so in the quote and you can check with the planning authority before a date is booked.

  • Existing cable routes reused
  • As few fixings into old fabric as possible
  • Consent questions flagged in the quote
  • Surfaces left as we found them

Bignor questions

Asked in Bignor

Still not sure?

Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.

Call 0333 360 8691

Usually not for a straight swap in the same position, because the work does not alter the character of the building. New cable routes, a different board position or visible surface trunking can be another matter. We flag anything like that in your quote, and the final word sits with the planning authority rather than with us.

Often, yes. Modern consumer units are compact, and we check the space from your photos before quoting. If it is too tight or the position is unsafe, for example directly above a sink or in a damp outhouse, we explain the options and price a move, which adds £250 when it is done with a new board.

Not for a standard board change. The new unit connects to the circuits already running into the old one, so floors and walls are left alone. The exception is a relocation or an added circuit, and in either case the route is agreed with you beforehand and the price is fixed in writing.
