Old frames, newer wiring
Around the green and out along the lanes, Lurgashall's older homes are mainly cottages and farmhouses, often extended over the years, with later houses in between. Electricity arrived long after most of these buildings went up, so the cables follow whatever route was easiest at the time, and the board is frequently squeezed into a lobby, a cupboard or the space under the stairs.
When we replace the board, we can usually keep it in the same spot and reuse the existing cables, so the fabric of an old house is left alone. If the position is awkward or unsafe, we talk through a better place, and moving it costs £250 on top of the new board.
- Same position kept where possible
- Old cable routes reused
- Better locations discussed
- Relocation £250 extra

Extra protection for timber and thatch
An RCD watches for current leaking to earth, but it cannot see a loose terminal or a damaged cable arcing inside a wall. An arc fault detection device, or AFDD, looks for the electrical signature of that arcing and switches the circuit off. The wiring regulations recommend them for socket circuits in homes, and they make particular sense where a building's frame or roof is combustible.
An RCBO board with AFDDs costs from £1,095 for a 10 way unit or £1,295 for a 14 way one, and like all our boards it carries Type 2 surge protection. If your Lurgashall home is timber framed or thatched, we will explain whether the extra cost over a standard RCBO board is worth it for you.
- Arc detection on each circuit
- RCBO and AFDD from £1,095
- Surge protection included

Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.
Call 0333 360 8691Nuisance tripping is less common than people fear. The devices are designed to ignore the brief, normal sparks from light switches, plugs and motors. When one does trip, it is usually pointing at something real, such as a loose connection or a crushed flex behind furniture. We test every circuit before fitting, which removes most of the likely causes in advance.
Yes. Priced from £625, a full RCBO board gives each circuit its own overcurrent and RCD protection, which meets current regulations for a typical home. AFDDs add a further layer aimed at fire caused by arcing. Whether that is worth paying for depends on how the house is built and used, and we will give you an honest view rather than a hard sell.
Usually, yes. Under the stairs is one of the most common places for a consumer unit, and the new steel enclosure helps contain any overheating inside the box. We check there is room to work on it safely and that shelves or coats are not crowding it. If the space is damp or very hard to reach, we suggest an alternative position.
