Why new consumer units come in steel cases
Since 2016 the wiring regulations have required consumer units in homes to have a non-combustible enclosure, which in practice means metal. The change followed concern about fires starting at loose connections inside plastic units, often in cupboards under the stairs, which is frequently the way out of a house. Keeping an older plastic board is not illegal, but it no longer meets the current standard.
