Fuse Box Replacement in Denton

Denton grew from a small village into part of Newhaven on the east side of the Ouse, and a lot of its homes had their fuse boards changed decades ago. If yours is a plastic unit from that era, we can replace it with a modern metal consumer unit at a price agreed upfront.

Denton's housing

Semis, terraces and low-rise flats on the hillside

Most of Denton's homes date from the twentieth century, spreading up the hillside east of the river as Newhaven expanded: semi-detached and terraced houses, bungalows and low-rise flats, with a small older core where the original village stood. Plenty are owner occupied and some are let.

Houses like these were wired for a very different way of living. A board that once fed a cooker, an immersion heater and a few socket circuits now copes with electric showers, tumble dryers, games consoles and laptops running all day. The new board is chosen around how you use the house now, not how it was used when built.

  • Low-rise flats covered
  • Board matched to modern use
  • Electric shower circuits checked

Why a plastic consumer unit is worth replacing

Since January 2016 the wiring regulations have required consumer units in homes to sit in a non-combustible enclosure, which in practice means metal. The change followed fires that started at loose connections inside plastic units. Boards fitted before then, including many from the 1980s and 1990s, were plastic, and plenty remain in service across Denton and Newhaven.

A plastic board is not automatically dangerous, and the rules do not force you to change it. But if it lacks RCD protection, shows scorch marks, or has a loose cover or missing blanks, replacing it is the sensible step. Our dual RCD boards start at £425 in a metal enclosure, with surge protection fitted.

  • Metal enclosures as standard
  • Scorch marks investigated
  • Missing blanks and covers sorted
  • RCD protection on every circuit

Still not sure?

Not necessarily. If it is in good condition, protects every circuit with an RCD and tests well, it can stay. Send us a photo and we will give you an honest view. For extra peace of mind, surge protection can sometimes be added for £165, or you can move up to a metal RCBO board from £625.

Yes. Booked alongside a new board, the EICR costs £99 rather than £175 to £350 on its own. You receive the Electrical Installation Certificate for the board and a full EICR for your tenants and records, which covers the five yearly inspection required for private rented homes.

Treat it as urgent. Scorching usually means a connection has been overheating, a recognised cause of consumer unit fires. If you can tell which circuit is affected, stop using it, leave the board closed and phone us. We will try to get to Denton the same day to make it safe.
