Twentieth century houses

Detached homes that have grown over the years

Much of Ifold was built during the twentieth century, largely as detached houses and bungalows on roomy plots. Over the decades many have gained extensions, conservatories, garages and new kitchens, and each addition tends to leave its mark on the fuse box: an extra unit screwed alongside, a spur taken off an old circuit, or a board with no spare ways left.

We bring everything back onto one properly sized consumer unit. Prices begin at £425 with dual RCDs, and many larger houses with plenty of circuits to protect opt for full RCBO protection across 10 to 12 ways at £695.

  • Extra units combined into one
  • Extension circuits sorted out
  • Spare ways left for later

Why surge protection matters in a wooded village

Where electricity reaches homes on overhead lines through woodland, storms and falling branches can cause faults on the network, and switching to restore supply can send brief voltage spikes into houses. Those spikes are hard on the electronics found in every modern home, from boiler controls and routers to televisions and the circuit boards inside washing machines.

Surge protection to Type 2 standard comes free with each new Ifold board we install. If your consumer unit is fairly new and in good order, we can add surge protection on its own as a retrofit for £165 rather than replacing the whole board.

  • Type 2 surge protection included
  • Retrofit available for £165
  • Shields boiler and router electronics
  • Fitted and tested with the board

Call 0333 360 8691

Not from a direct strike on the house, which nothing in a consumer unit can fully guard against. A Type 2 device is designed for the far more common transient surges carried along the supply cables, including those from distant lightning and network switching. It limits the spike before it reaches your sockets and appliances.

A new board cannot prevent faults on the network, which are for UK Power Networks to repair. What it can do is make your own installation easier to bring back, with clearly labelled circuits and RCBOs that show exactly which circuit has tripped if the problem turns out to be inside the house rather than outside it.

Usually, yes. Where a second unit was added for an extension or garage, we look at whether its circuits can be brought onto the new main board. If they can, the old unit is removed and everything is tested together. If the building is detached or some distance away, a separate sub-board may still be the better answer.
