Rusper parish, Low Weald countryside

Fuse Box Replacement in Langhurst Hill

Langhurst Hill, a small Rusper parish hamlet in the countryside north west of Crawley, has addresses split between the RH11 and RH12 postcodes. Rural homes like these may take their electricity from overhead lines with their own earth rod, so we test the earthing before any new board goes in.

What a hamlet home asks of its fuse board

As a hamlet, Langhurst Hill is a small cluster of rural properties rather than a village street, so there is no single house type to describe. Homes in settings like this are usually detached, often older and altered over the years, with gardens, outbuildings and long cable runs. The fuse board is frequently whatever went in at the last rewire, and that may have been decades ago.

No two properties are alike, so our prices come from photos showing the board, where the meter sits and any supplies to outbuildings. Steel dual RCD boards from £425 and full RCBO boards from £625 between them suit most homes, and Type 2 surge protection goes into each installation, a useful safeguard where overhead lines are exposed to lightning.

TT earthing on a country supply

Electricity arriving by overhead line often comes without an earth terminal from the network, leaving the house to take its earth from a metal rod buried in the ground. This arrangement, called TT, works safely only if RCDs disconnect quickly when a fault occurs, because the rod alone cannot carry enough current to blow a fuse. On a TT supply, an ageing fuse box lacking RCDs is a real concern.

Ahead of fitting, we test the earth electrode's resistance at your Langhurst Hill home and look over the rod, its clamp and the earthing conductor. If the reading is too high or the rod is damaged, we will recommend a new one. On TT supplies a full RCBO board is often the better choice, because a fault on one circuit then trips only that circuit.

  • Earth rod resistance measured
  • Clamp and conductor inspected
  • RCD protection on every circuit
  • Full RCBO from £625

Finding Langhurst Hill

Our route from Brighton & Hove runs up the A23 and M23 towards Crawley, then out along country lanes into Rusper parish. Rural addresses can be hard to find, so a note about your gate or driveway helps. If your supply has gone off, phone us and we will push to arrive the same day. Distance makes no difference to what you pay.

Look near the meter for a green and yellow cable running out to a rod in the ground or a small inspection pit, rather than to a clamp on the incoming cable. Overhead wires arriving at the house are another clue. From a photo taken around the meter we can usually identify which system you have.

Not usually. Flickering in bad weather normally comes from the overhead network, for example when branches touch the lines, and it should be reported to UK Power Networks by calling 105. A new board does add Type 2 surge protection, which helps shield electronics from brief voltage spikes, but it cannot steady the supply itself.

No. Because we never charge for travel within Sussex, a hamlet in Rusper parish is priced exactly like a house in central Crawley. The price depends on the board you choose and anything else your photos show needs doing, such as moving the board during the change, which adds £250.
