Cottages and later homes

Maplehurst houses and the age of their boards

Older cottages and twentieth century houses make up Maplehurst, a small rural village among the farmland of Nuthurst parish. Homes like these have often had their fuse box changed once already, typically for a plastic split load unit in the 1990s or 2000s. Those boards were standard at the time, but they fall short of what is fitted today.

A split load board usually protects only some circuits with an RCD, has no surge protection and sits in a plastic case. Swapping it for dual RCD, from £425, or full RCBO, from £625, puts every circuit behind RCD protection.

Why new consumer units come in metal cases

Since 2016 the wiring regulations have required consumer units in homes to sit in a non combustible enclosure, which in practice means steel. The change followed concerns about fires at consumer units, where a loose connection can overheat. Plastic units fitted before then are not automatically dangerous, but extending one to current standards is rarely straightforward.

If an electrician has told you they cannot add a circuit to your plastic board, this is usually why. Our boards are all steel, each has a Type 2 surge protector built in, and they leave room for a car charger, a garden room or an extra circuit later without starting again.

  • Steel enclosure as standard
  • Meets the current regulations
  • Room for future circuits
  • Surge protection included

No. The requirement for non combustible enclosures applies to new work, so a plastic board fitted before 2016 is not illegal. An inspection may still recommend improvement, particularly if the board has no RCDs or shows signs of heat damage. Whether it needs changing now is something we can judge honestly from a photo.

Usually because any new work has to meet current standards, and an older plastic board without suitable RCD protection makes that difficult. Rather than bolt something onto an outdated unit, the sensible answer is a new metal board, with spare ways for the circuit you wanted and any others later on.

Roughly the same as most existing boards, although a home moving up to a 10 or 12 way board will need a little more width. If the current cupboard is cramped or awkward to reach, we can suggest a better position, and moving the board at the same time adds £250.
