Windmill village in the Low Weald

Fuse Box Replacement in Shipley

Shipley is best known for its tall white smock mill. For the people living near it, the more pressing question may be the age of the fuse box under the stairs. The village lies south east of Billingshurst, and we replace boards here at a fixed price, with the whole house tested.

Old timbers, newer wiring

From timber framed cottages to later village homes

Shipley is an old village with a Norman church, and the parish has its share of timber framed and brick cottages, some of them listed. Alongside them are later houses and bungalows from the twentieth century. Wiring in older buildings has usually been redone in stages, so a single house can hold rubber insulated cable, early PVC and modern twin and earth all at once.

Older buildings also mean awkward routes. Cables run through beams, behind panelling or under old floorboards, and we keep to the routes already there wherever possible rather than cutting into historic fabric. Where wiring is visibly perished, such as crumbling rubber insulation, we show you and talk through the options.

Arc fault detection

Extra protection where fire matters most

An arc fault is a small spark inside a damaged cable or a loose connection, often hidden in a wall or roof void. Ordinary breakers and RCDs are not designed to spot it. An arc fault detection device, or AFDD, watches for that signature and cuts the circuit. In a house with exposed timbers, old floor joists and wiring of uncertain age, that extra layer can be worth considering.

For RCBOs and AFDDs together, prices begin at £1,095 for a 10 way board, and a 14 way board costs £1,295. It is not compulsory in most homes, and we will not push it. If your Shipley home is timber framed, thatched or simply full of old wood, we will explain the case for it and let you decide.

Getting to you

Shipley, a short hop off the A272

From Brighton we normally take the A23 north, turn west on the A272 at Bolney, and the lanes south of the main road bring us into the village. There is no charge for travel. Once you have texted in pictures of your board, the quote is fixed; after a power failure, ring, and if we are able, someone will come out that day.

Replacing a board like for like inside a listed building does not usually need listed building consent, but work that affects the historic fabric, such as chasing cables into old plaster or fixing to original timbers, might. We keep to existing routes and fixings where we can, and if your plans go further we suggest a word with the Horsham District Council conservation team first.

Probably less so than for an old timber framed cottage, but it is your call. A bungalow with sound PVC wiring is well served by eight ways of full RCBO protection, which starts at £625 and gives every circuit an RCD of its own. Some people still want arc fault detection for peace of mind, especially with older relatives at home, and we are happy to fit it.

Rarely for a straight swap. The new consumer unit connects to the circuits already there, so floors and walls are normally left alone. Boards only come up if a circuit needs tracing or a fault has to be found, and in an old house with original floorboards we take care to lift and refit them neatly.
