Twentieth century houses and older cottages
Broad Oak includes twentieth century houses and bungalows as well as older cottages, and many are family homes. Their electrics have often been updated once, which usually means a plastic consumer unit fitted some years ago with a single RCD protecting most of the circuits. That was an improvement at the time, but it no longer matches how households use power.
A typical home now runs electric showers, induction hobs, tumble dryers, computers and outdoor sockets, often all at once. On a board with one shared RCD, a single faulty appliance can switch off half the house, including the freezer and the boiler controls. Upgrading the board removes that weak point.
- Single RCD boards replaced
- Separate protection per circuit
- Outdoor sockets properly covered
- Room left for future circuits

Ending the whole house trip
If your trip switch drops and you lose the kitchen, the lights and the heating together, the board is telling you something about its design. Older split load units group many circuits under one RCD, so a nuisance trip from a kettle, a damp outside socket or an ageing appliance takes everything else down with it.
A full RCBO board gives each circuit its own protection. Prices run from £625 for 8 ways, through £695 for 10 to 12, up to £795 for 14 to 16, and each one includes testing plus Type 2 surge protection. When a fault does occur, only that circuit goes off, and tracking down the cause becomes far quicker.
- Faults isolated to one circuit
- Freezer and heating stay on
- Quicker fault finding
- Surge protection fitted as standard

Asked in Broad Oak
Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.
Call 0333 360 8691Because your board probably groups several circuits behind one RCD. When that RCD detects current leaking to earth it cannot tell which circuit caused it, so it disconnects all of them. Swap it for a full RCBO board and every circuit trips independently, so a fault in one leaves all the others running.
Sometimes. Where the current consumer unit is sound, compatible and has room, adding Type 2 surge protection on its own costs £165. If it is not suitable, we will tell you and explain why a replacement board, which includes surge protection anyway, is the better value.
Count the circuits on your existing board, then allow a couple of spares for things like an EV charger, a garden office or a heat pump. Your photos usually tell us all we need. For plenty of family houses, 10 to 12 ways is the right size, and that costs £695 with full RCBO protection.
