The hamlet that names the parish

Fuse Box Replacement in Warbleton

Clustered round its parish church south east of Heathfield, the small hamlet of Warbleton lends its name to a wider parish, Rushlake Green included. Older properties are part of the picture here, so we test the existing wiring carefully whenever we change a fuse box.

Old houses, old cables, new boards

A hamlet that grew up around an old parish church is likely to include some properties of real age, alongside later farm and country houses. In homes like these the wiring has often been altered piece by piece, and behind an old fuse box we sometimes find modern cable, older PVC and, now and then, rubber insulated cable from a much earlier installation.

That is why we test before we fit. If the wiring passes, the new board goes on straight away: a dual RCD unit from £425 or full RCBO from £625. If a circuit fails, we explain the result and agree with you what happens next before going any further.

What the insulation test tells us

RCDs work by detecting current leaking to earth, so a new board can expose faults an old fuse box simply ignored. Before we commit, we carry out insulation resistance tests on each circuit to see how well the cables are holding up. Old rubber insulation in particular can turn brittle with age, and that shows up in the readings.

Most circuits pass, and those go straight onto the new board. A circuit that fails can usually be left safely disconnected, with everything else in the home kept working while you decide on repairs. All of the readings are recorded on your certificate, and that is in your email within 48 hours.

We tell you straight away and show you the readings. Quite often only one circuit is at fault, and it can be left safe and disconnected while every other circuit moves onto the new board. If the wiring is poor throughout, we explain that a rewire may be needed first, rather than fitting a board that would simply keep tripping.

Rubber insulated cable was largely replaced by PVC by the 1960s, so it mostly turns up in homes that have not been rewired since. It usually has a black rubber or cloth braided finish, and the insulation may crack where it enters switches or the fuse box. Leave it alone rather than handling it; we can make a start from a picture of the board with its cover still on.

A rewireable fuse box can keep going for decades, but it offers no RCD protection against electric shock and cannot detect the small earth leakage currents that often come before a fault. Modern boards add surge protection too. If yours still works there is no emergency, but it is better replaced on your own terms than after it fails.
