Older cores, newer edges

Like many villages around Rye, Iden has older properties at its heart and later twentieth century houses around them, with farms and isolated homes further out in the parish. The newer houses may still have their original plastic consumer unit or an early RCD board, while the older ones may have been rewired once, partly, or not at all.

Whatever the age, a board change here follows the same order: isolate, test each existing circuit, fit the new unit, then test again and certify. If a circuit fails insulation testing, it stays off and we explain why, so you are never left with a board that keeps tripping.

  • Circuits tested before and after
  • Failed circuits explained, not hidden
  • Early RCD boards upgraded
  • Certificate emailed within 48 hours

When your earth is a rod in the ground

Outside village centres, many homes on overhead supplies have no earth provided by the network. Instead the installation is TT earthed, with a metal rod in the soil near the house providing the earth path. How well it works depends on the soil, its moisture and the state of the connection, and a rod that was fine when fitted can deteriorate unnoticed.

On a TT supply the RCDs do the real work of disconnecting a fault, so the rod and the board have to suit each other. We measure the rod's resistance, check the clamp and conductor, and fit a board with RCD protection on every circuit. The readings go on your certificate.

  • Earth rod resistance measured
  • Clamps and conductors checked
  • RCD cover on every circuit
  • New rod quoted only if needed
Getting to you

Iden from our Brighton base

The drive from Brighton follows the coast through Hastings and Winchelsea to Rye, then heads north on the B2082, and you are not charged for any of it. We need only pictures of the board before agreeing a fixed quote and a date that works for you. Should the power go off altogether, phone us; we aim to be out the same day.

Iden questions

Still not sure?

Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.

Call 0333 360 8691

Look near the meter for the main earthing cable, green and yellow, and follow where it goes. If it runs to a clamp on the incoming supply cable, the network provides your earth. If it leaves the house for a rod in the ground or a small inspection pit outside, you are TT. A photo of the meter area tells us which.

An RCD can sit switched on for years while its mechanism slowly stiffens. Pressing the test button shows that it trips, but not how quickly. Our instruments time the trip, and a standalone EICR from £175 will tell you where your current board stands. If you replace the board, the same report costs £99 at that visit.

The Electrical Installation Certificate records what we installed, the earthing arrangement, and the test results for every circuit, the measured values that show the protection works. It lands in your inbox inside 48 hours. Keep it with your house documents, because a buyer's solicitor, an insurer or a future electrician may all ask to see it.
