A handful of rural homes

Small hamlet, very different houses

In a hamlet the size of Platt's Green, no two houses are quite alike. An older cottage can sit beside a much later house, and most homes have been extended or partly rewired over the years. We cannot know your home until we see it, which is why we start with photos: the board, the meter, the main earth cable and anything that looks like a second fuse box nearby.

A second box is common in rural homes with electric heating, and it changes the job. Once we can see what is there, the board that suits gets a fixed price: dual RCD units start at £425 and all RCBO boards at £625, and Type 2 surge protection is fitted to both.

Storage heaters, two-rate meters and split boards

Where a rural home has no mains gas, the heating is often oil or electric storage heaters. Storage heaters charge overnight on a cheaper rate, so the house has a two-rate meter and, in older set-ups, a separate fuse box for the off-peak circuits, sometimes with a time switch beside the meter. It works, but that second box is often as old as the heaters themselves.

Swapping both boxes, or merging them into a single dual tariff board if the meter setup allows, brings modern RCD protection to the heaters and to every other circuit in the home. We keep the off-peak circuits on the correct meter register and leave the supplier's switching equipment alone, so the heaters keep charging on the cheaper rate as before.

  • Off-peak circuits kept separate
  • Two boxes replaced or combined
  • Heater circuits RCD protected
  • Supplier switching left untouched

Not always, but both should be inspected. If the off-peak box still has rewireable fuses or no RCD protection, it carries the same risks as an old main board and is usually best replaced at the same visit. We price both from your photos, so you can decide before anything is booked.

Yes. Storage heaters are a simple heating load and sit comfortably on RCD or RCBO protection. If an RCD trips when the heaters switch on overnight, that points to a fault in a heater or its wiring, often damp in an old element, rather than to the new board. Our testing on the day is designed to find that kind of problem before we leave.

It should not. Storage heaters hold their warmth for hours, so if we work during the day the house stays comfortable while the supply is off. A typical board change is done within 4 to 6 hours, so once every circuit has passed its tests the heaters take their overnight charge that evening as normal.
