Period buildings in the centre, newer roads around them
The older buildings along and behind the High Street include cottages, townhouses and former shops, some of them listed and many inside the conservation area. Further out the village is largely twentieth century, from post-war semis to later cul-de-sacs. A board change in one of those period buildings and another on an estate road can be very different jobs.
In the newer homes the usual problem is an ageing plastic board with a single RCD, which a dual RCD replacement from £425 solves neatly. Older buildings more often hide early wiring running alongside later circuits, so the full inspection that comes with every new board is where the important findings tend to appear.
- Single RCD boards upgraded
- Old and new wiring tested together
- Neat, fully labelled layout
- Care taken in period interiors

Changing a board without spoiling an old building
Swapping a consumer unit in the same position rarely alters the character of a building, but moving it, or chasing new cables into old plaster and timber, is a different matter. If your Hurstpierpoint home is listed, check with Mid Sussex District Council before anything that disturbs historic fabric, and we will plan the work around existing cable routes wherever possible.
In older houses we also pay close attention to main bonding, the earth connections to incoming water and gas pipes. Where plumbing has been altered over the years these are often missing, undersized or connected to a pipe that is now plastic. Putting that right is part of making the new board safe, and we show you what we found.
- Existing board position kept where possible
- Old cable routes reused
- Main bonding checked and corrected
- Findings shown to you on site

Asked in Hurstpierpoint
Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.
Call 0333 360 8691Yes. We take extra care over where cables run and how the new board is fixed to old walls. If the position has to change, we agree the route with you first, and if you think consent might be needed we suggest asking the council before we start. Testing and certification are exactly the same as in any other home.
Usually, yes. Two boards normally mean a kitchen, extension or garage was added later with a unit of its own. We can bring every circuit into one new consumer unit if it has enough ways, which tidies things up and puts the lot under modern RCD or RCBO protection. If a separate board still makes sense, we explain why.
Clear a path to the board and the meter, and let us know about anything that must stay powered or be restarted, such as alarms, pond pumps or medical equipment. It is worth filling the kettle and charging phones first, as a typical change runs to four to six hours, most of it without power. Freezers keep cold if left shut.
