Two kinds of housing

Established streets and brand new estates

Broadbridge Heath has grown a great deal, so its housing falls broadly into two camps. Older homes from the twentieth century often still have their original or early replacement boards, some with rewireable fuses or a single RCD. The newer estates, built in recent years, came with modern consumer units designed to current standards.

Homes in the older group gain a real upgrade from either dual RCD, from £425, or full RCBO protection, from £625. For the newer group, replacement is rarely needed at all. We look at your photos and tell you which camp you are in before quoting anything.

When your board is modern already

If you live in a recently built home, your consumer unit is probably only a few years old, and ripping it out would waste money. Some new builds, though, were handed over without surge protection, and plenty of owners now want to add a car charger, a home battery or solar panels.

A Type 2 surge protector can be added to a suitable existing board for £165. If you are planning a charger or panels, we can check whether there is a spare way and whether the board is suitable to take them. Sometimes the right answer is to leave the board alone.

Broadbridge Heath questions

Still not sure?

Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.

Call 0333 360 8691

Almost certainly not. Recent new builds come with consumer units designed to current regulations, usually with RCD protection on every circuit. What some lack is surge protection, which we can add for £165 if the board suits it. A photo is enough for a straight answer from us, even when that answer is that nothing is needed.

We isolate the supply, remove the old board, fit the new consumer unit and connect each circuit, then test the whole property. Expect the job to last 4 to 6 hours, much of it with the power off. Your Electrical Installation Certificate follows by email no more than 48 hours later, and we notify the work to Building Control as Part P requires.

Yes. In England, a private landlord needs an EICR on the home every five years or sooner. The report costs £99 when we are replacing the board at the same time; if booked alone it ranges from £175 to £350, with larger properties at the top end. We email the report so you can give your tenants a copy.
