Flint, brick and decades of alterations

West Marden's houses are largely traditional, built in the flint and brick found all over this part of the Downs, with a few later homes alongside. Inside, the electrics usually tell a longer story than the walls do: an old rewire here, a new kitchen circuit there, a fuse box swapped once and then left alone for thirty years.

Changing the board is the moment to find out what you really have. We inspect the whole installation, put RCD protection across every circuit and add Type 2 surge protection as standard, all at a fixed price agreed from your photos before we arrive.

What testing finds behind old light switches

Lighting circuits wired before the mid 1960s often had no earth conductor at all, because it was not required for lights at the time. In an old cottage that may still be true of part of the lighting, which matters if you have metal light fittings or metal switch plates. Old rubber insulated cable, where any survives, is another thing we look for.

Our testing shows where an earth is missing and which fittings are affected. Swapping to plastic fittings and switches can be a simple answer, while other cases need a new cable run. Either way, we explain the findings in plain English and price anything extra before doing it.

  • Metal fittings checked
  • Old cable flagged

Only if the lighting circuit has no earth. Metal switches and fittings need earthing so that a fault cannot leave them live. When we test, we check each lighting point. Where there is no earth, we can fit plastic accessories or recommend rewiring that circuit, and we talk you through the choice and the cost.

Yes, in many cases. A new consumer unit improves protection for the circuits that are sound. Any circuit that fails testing is either repaired first or, with your agreement, left disconnected and clearly recorded. We never connect a circuit we know to be unsafe just to finish the job.

A dual RCD board, costing from £425, shares the circuits between two RCDs, so one fault takes out half the house. Pay from £625 for a full RCBO board instead, and every circuit has a combined breaker and RCD of its own, so only the one with the fault switches off. For larger or busier homes, RCBOs are usually worth the difference.
