Reading the age of a Yapton fuse box

In a village with this much building over the decades, the fuse box tells you roughly when a house was last wired. Rewireable fuses with wire carriers point to an older installation. A plastic board with a row of MCBs and no RCD is typical of the 1970s and 1980s, while a split load board with one RCD suggests the 1990s or 2000s. Each needs a slightly different approach.

Older boards get a full insulation test on every circuit before anything is reconnected, because faults hidden for decades show up then. Split load boards are often upgraded for convenience, so one fault no longer blacks out half the house. Dual RCD protection is available from £425, and £575 buys a 12 way high integrity board.

  • Rewireable fuses replaced
  • No-RCD MCB boards upgraded
  • Split load boards rearranged
  • Insulation tested on every circuit

Solar panels, batteries and your consumer unit

Solar panels are an increasingly common sight on homes across West Sussex, old and new, and the flat coastal plain around Yapton is no exception. Each system adds a circuit to the board, and a home battery usually adds another. Older consumer units were never laid out for a generating source, and the PV may have been squeezed into a spare way or a separate isolator.

When we replace a board in a home with solar, we connect the PV circuit to its own suitably rated device, check the isolator labelling and leave the inverter supply clearly identified. Planning a battery later? Say so, and we will leave a spare way and room for the extra protection it needs.

  • PV circuit on its own device
  • Isolation and labelling checked
  • Spare way for a battery
  • Surge protection included

For the hours the board is out, yes. A grid connected inverter shuts down when it loses the mains supply, which is a deliberate safety feature. Once the new consumer unit is in, we reconnect the PV circuit, test it and check the inverter starts up again before we leave. A battery system is isolated and brought back the same way.

Not automatically. A split load board of that age with a working RCD may still be serviceable, and if yours is, we will say so. The usual reasons to upgrade are nuisance tripping that takes out half the house, no surge protection, a plastic enclosure, or plans for solar, a battery or a charger that need extra ways.

Your Electrical Installation Certificate, listing the test results circuit by circuit, is sent to your email address within 48 hours. The work is notifiable under Part P, so we register it with Building Control and a compliance certificate follows. Our workmanship is guaranteed for 6 years, so keep all three documents together with your house papers.
