Houses built far apart in time

Sharpthorne homes, old and newer

Sharpthorne has grown in stages, so a short walk can pass houses built a century or more apart. Older homes may still have a fuse box with rewireable fuses, or rubber insulated cable hidden in the walls, while later houses tend to have plastic split load boards from the 1980s or 1990s that lack the protection current regulations expect.

Every board change includes testing the whole installation, so tired cable shows up before it causes trouble. If something needs more than a board swap, you hear about it first. An EICR alongside the board costs £99 and gives you a full written report on every circuit.

When the kitchen outgrows the board

A new kitchen often brings an induction hob, a double oven and perhaps a boiling water tap, and many bathrooms now have a powerful electric shower. Each of these wants its own correctly rated circuit. Older consumer units were never laid out for that demand, and tacking circuits onto a full board is how overloaded, untidy installations begin.

If you are planning a kitchen or bathroom, tell us before the fitters arrive. We size the new board with ways for the cooker, hob and shower, check the main fuse at the meter and leave every circuit clearly labelled for the trades who follow.

  • Separate circuits for hob and oven
  • Shower circuits correctly rated
  • Main fuse checked at the meter
  • Labels left for the kitchen fitter

The board will, provided each appliance has its own circuit sized for its load. What can limit you is the incoming supply. We look at the main fuse rating and your likely total demand, and if the numbers are tight we say so, rather than leaving you with a supply that struggles when the shower and hob run together.

It is wiring from around the 1960s and earlier, insulated with rubber that dries out and crumbles with age. Black cable with a rubbery or fabric covering near the fuse box is a common clue. Our tests on every circuit show whether the insulation is still sound, and we tell you plainly if it is not.

Yes. Moving the consumer unit to a better position at the same time as replacing it adds £250 to the board price. If you only want the existing board moved, a standalone relocation is £395. During a kitchen refit is the easiest time, because walls and units are already open.
