Fuse Box Replacement in Rye
Rye is one of the best preserved historic towns in England, with medieval and Georgian houses lining cobbled streets on its hilltop citadel. Changing a fuse box in a building like that calls for care as much as skill. We replace boards with as little disturbance as possible, at a fixed price.

Timber frames, brick fronts and cellars
Inside the old town, many houses are timber framed behind later brick or tile fronts, and a large number are listed. Streets such as Mermaid Street and the area around Church Square are famous for exactly this. Below some properties are old cellars. Outside the citadel, Rye has Victorian streets, twentieth century housing, and the village homes of Playden, Peasmarsh and beyond.
In historic homes, wiring has often been threaded through in stages, and boards can sit in very awkward spots. We test every circuit and fit the new unit in the existing position wherever we can. Where the board sits in a cupboard under a steep old staircase or in a cellar, we check it is still reasonably accessible and dry.
- Timber framed houses
- Listed buildings in the citadel
- Old cellars below some properties
- Victorian streets below the hill
- Village homes around Rye
- Boards kept in their existing position

A town that welcomes visitors all year
Rye and nearby Camber are popular with visitors, so a lot of property here is let as holiday cottages, apartments and seaside homes. Owners need electrics that cope with changeovers, a stream of unfamiliar guests and appliances being used hard. A board that trips everything at once because of one faulty kettle means a call from a guest, and possibly a bad review.
A full RCBO board keeps a single fault to a single circuit. We can schedule work between bookings and include an EICR for £99. If you manage a property from a distance, we can collect keys from a key safe or local agent and email you the certificate when we are done. Long term tenancies are covered by the five yearly EICR rule.
- Holiday cottages in the old town
- Seaside homes at Camber
- Work fitted between bookings
- Full RCBO boards from £625
- EICR for £99 with any board
- Long term lets covered too

Working carefully in a conservation town
Much of Rye's centre is a conservation area and many buildings are listed. Like for like replacement of a consumer unit in the same place does not usually change the character of a building, but new cable runs through historic fabric, chasing old walls or moving the board could. We plan the work to avoid that wherever possible and tell you in advance if anything might need the conservation officer's view.
In timber framed houses, an RCBO board with arc fault detection adds protection against the kind of wiring faults that cause fires. Ours start from £1,095 for 10 ways. If arc fault protection is more than you need, a full RCBO board from £625 is still a large step up from an old fuse box, and we will help you choose.
- Like for like board positions
- No unnecessary chasing of old walls
- Conservation questions flagged early
- Arc fault boards from £1,095
- 14 way RCBO+AFDD £1,295
- Dust sheets and tidy working
Fuse box trouble in Rye
If the board in your Rye home or holiday let has failed, call 0333 360 8691. We answer between 8am and 8pm, seven days a week, and aim to reach Rye the same day where possible. Holiday let owners: tell us if guests are arriving and we will do our best to have the property usable in time. For homes in Camber and the villages, the same applies: same day where possible, and a fixed price before any replacement work begins.

Fuse box questions from Rye
Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre. No pressure, no hard sell.
Call 0333 360 8691A like for like replacement in the same position does not usually need consent, because it does not affect the building's special interest. New cable routes, chasing historic walls or moving the board could be different. If your home is listed, tell us when you send your photo, and we will explain what we plan to do so you can check with the council's conservation officer if needed.
It is worth serious thought. AFDDs detect arcing from damaged cables or loose connections, which RCDs and breakers are not designed to pick up. In a timber framed building, that extra layer of fire protection can be valuable. Our RCBO and AFDD boards are £1,095 for 10 ways and £1,295 for 14 ways.
Yes. Most board changes take 4 to 6 hours, so we can usually fit one on a changeover day and leave the property tested and ready for the next guests. Give us your booking calendar and we will find a slot that does not cost you a stay. The certificate is emailed within 48 hours.
Homes near the sea are more exposed to salt air, which can corrode external meter boxes, outdoor sockets and earth connections. When we replace your board, we inspect these as part of the whole property test. The new board is fitted indoors in a dry position. Any corrosion we find outside is noted on your certificate.
We do. Rye is in Rother District, and as a Part P registered contractor we notify the board change on your behalf. You receive a compliance certificate by post and an Electrical Installation Certificate by email within 48 hours. There is nothing for you to apply for, and keeping both certificates together will help when you sell or insure the property.
