Rural homes with heavier electrical loads

A small cluster of homes in farmland between Wilmington and the River Cuckmere, Milton Street has a mix of older cottages and individual houses, some extended or converted over the years. Where there is no gas, cooking, hot water and sometimes heating all fall on the electricity supply and on the board that controls it.

An electric cooker, an immersion heater, storage heaters and an electric shower can all be drawing power on the same winter day. Without spare capacity or RCD protection, an ageing fuse box was never designed to cope with that. A new board puts each of those heavy circuits on correctly rated protection, with the whole installation tested.

Getting the board ready for a heat pump

Homes that rely on oil, LPG or electric heating are natural candidates for an air source heat pump. A heat pump needs its own dedicated circuit, often with a separate supply for a backup immersion heater, and the installer will want a consumer unit with spare ways and modern protection to connect to. An old fuse box can hold the whole project up.

Planning a heat pump? Mention it when you send your photo and we will leave suitable spare ways, record your main fuse size and earthing on the certificate, and hand your heating installer a tested, documented starting point. Solar panels and home batteries can be planned for in the same way.

Sometimes. It depends on the heat pump's size, your main fuse rating and what else the house runs. Most heat pump installs go ahead on an existing single phase supply, but your installer has to notify UK Power Networks and may need an upgrade. We record your main fuse size so that conversation starts with facts.

Homes on Economy 7 or similar tariffs often have a second unit for the off peak circuits, fed from the dual rate meter. We test those circuits along with everything else, and if the off peak unit is old we can replace it on the same visit, keeping your tariff working as before.

Often a larger one, yes. Cookers, showers, immersions and heaters each want their own circuit, and older boards in all-electric homes are often full. At £795, a full RCBO board of 14 to 16 ways has room for everything, a future heat pump included, and each circuit trips independently.
