Roadside houses and homes in the woods

Much of Rake lies along the B2070, the road that carried A3 traffic before the bypasses were built, with lanes leading off into the surrounding woods. That gives a mix of older roadside properties and twentieth century houses in their own plots, so there is no single type of board we expect. Some homes still have fuse boxes; others have early plastic consumer units.

Plastic units were the norm for years, but current regulations ask for consumer units in homes to be housed in non combustible enclosures. The boards we fit are all metal clad, have Type 2 surge protection built in and give either dual RCD or full RCBO protection, and we price them from your photos.

  • Fuse boxes and early plastic units replaced
  • Metal clad consumer units
  • Dual RCD from £425
  • Full RCBO from £625

Living on the county line

Rake sits close to the boundary between West Sussex and Hampshire, so homes nearby can come under different councils. For a fuse box replacement the work is identical either side: the same regulations, the same testing and the same notification to the local Building Control department under Part P. The only difference is which authority receives it.

Homes in Rake are charged our standard fixed prices, the drive adds nothing to them, and we email your Electrical Installation Certificate within 48 hours. If you are not sure which council your home comes under, your council tax bill will say, and we make the Part P notification to match.

Getting to you

Getting out to Rake

Rake ranks among the more distant villages we serve from Brighton. We come across on the A272 through Midhurst and Rogate, or up the A3 when traffic favours it. Most board changes are booked ahead from a photo quote, and for urgent faults we answer the phone and will say straight away whether we can reach you that day.

Rake questions

Still not sure?

Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.

Not automatically. A plastic consumer unit in good condition, with RCD protection, is not unsafe simply because it predates the current rules. But if it has no RCDs, shows signs of heat damage or needs changing for another reason, any replacement must be non combustible. We give you an honest view from your photos.

The power has to be off for much of the job, which typically runs four to six hours. You might choose to work elsewhere that day, or we can agree in advance when the power goes off so you can plan calls around it. Tell us when booking and we will set a start time that suits.

Look for a switch marked RCD, usually with a small test button labelled T. If you only see fuses or circuit breakers and one main switch, there is probably none. Sending us a picture settles it, and we will explain what you have and whether it needs upgrading.
