Established homes beside newer housing

Pease Pottage has an established core of older houses and bungalows, and in recent years it has grown with new housing on the edge of the village. The two need different things. Older homes may still have a rewireable fuse box or an early unit without RCDs, while new build homes already have modern boards that may simply be short of space.

In the older houses, the choice is a dual RCD unit with six ways at £425, or full RCBO boards starting at £625. For newer homes, we will usually tell you that the existing board can stay, and add only what is missing, such as surge protection.

  • Early pre-RCD units upgraded

Adding a charger, solar or a battery to a newer home

Owners of newer homes often want to add an electric car charger, solar panels or a home battery within a few years of moving in. Builders tend to specify boards with just enough ways for the original circuits, and some were fitted before surge protection became standard. That can leave nowhere to connect a new circuit properly.

Where the existing board is sound, a surge protection retrofit costs £165. If it has no room left, moving to a larger RCBO board, 10 to 12 ways at £695, gives each new circuit its own protection. We test everything, so your charger or solar installer has a clean starting point.

Getting to you

Just south of Crawley at junction 11

Coming from Brighton, we reach Pease Pottage almost straight up the A23, just where it becomes the M23, so the trip is quick and travel costs you nothing. A fixed quote needs only pictures of the board plus the meter, and it helps to hear about any plans for a charger or solar. When the whole house loses power, we come out that same day if the diary allows.

Pease Pottage questions

Still not sure?

Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.

It may not. A recent board should already have RCD protection. The usual reasons to change something are a missing surge protection device, which we can add for £165, or no spare ways for a charger, battery or new circuit. From a picture of the board, we can tell you which of the two, if either, applies.

Yes. Pass on their notes with a picture of the board and we will price only what is needed, be that surge protection, extra ways or full RCBO protection. We test the installation afterwards and email the certificate within 48 hours, which your solar installer can then refer to.

It is not automatically dangerous, but it lacks RCD protection, which switches the power off quickly if someone touches a live part or a cable is damaged. Rewireable fuses are also easy to repair with the wrong wire. For a modest bungalow, the usual swap is a £425 dual RCD board with six ways.
