A planned resort with a long building history
Much of central Eastbourne was laid out in the Victorian era as a planned resort on the Duke of Devonshire's land, so Meads, Upperton and the streets behind the seafront are full of tall villas and terraces. Many have been rewired more than once, often in stages, and it is common to find an older board feeding a newer extension, with circuits that have never had RCD protection.
Further out, Hampden Park, Roselands and Langney are dominated by twentieth century semis and estate housing, while Sovereign Harbour is largely 1990s and later. Older estate homes often still have rewireable fuses or early plastic boards; harbour properties tend to need an upgrade when owners add EV charging or a bigger kitchen.
- Victorian villas in Meads and Upperton
- Staged rewires with mixed wiring ages
- Estate semis in Hampden Park and Langney
- Newer homes at Sovereign Harbour
- Rewireable fuses still in many older boards
- Plastic boards replaced with metal enclosures

Converted flats, retirement blocks and family lets
A large share of Eastbourne's rented homes are flats carved out of former hotels, guest houses and big Victorian houses. Conversions like these frequently have a separate board in each flat plus a landlord supply for hallways, lighting and door entry, and those communal boards are easy to forget. An unsatisfactory EICR on any one of them can hold up a tenancy.
Private landlords in England need an EICR at least every five years under the 2020 rented sector regulations. If a report flags the board, we can replace it at a fixed price, add an EICR for £99 alongside the work and keep tenant disruption to a single day. For a building with several flats, send a photo of each board and we will quote them together.
- Hotel and guest house conversions
- Landlord supplies for communal areas
- Retirement and purpose built flats
- EICR for £99 with any board
- Standalone EICR from £175
- Keys collected from your agent

Shared risers and old meter cupboards
Converted seafront buildings in Eastbourne often run each flat's supply up through a shared riser or from a bank of meters in a basement cupboard. Over decades of alterations, tails get extended, boards get moved and labelling disappears. Before we change a board in a building like this, we confirm which supply feeds which flat and check the main earthing and bonding back at the intake.
If the meter cupboard is crowded or damp, we will tell you, and where the board itself is badly placed we can relocate it as part of the job for an extra £250. Any issue with the supply side is passed to UK Power Networks. Labelling at the meter position is updated so the next electrician knows which supply is which.
- Supplies traced flat by flat
- Meter cupboards checked for damp
- Earthing and bonding verified
- Board labelling written up clearly
- Relocation with new board add £250
- Supply issues referred to UK Power Networks

Fuse box questions from Eastbourne
Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre. No pressure, no hard sell.
Call 0333 360 8691Usually, yes. Your flat's consumer unit can be replaced on its own, provided the supply feeding it is sound. We check the incoming tails, the main earth and the bonding before we start, and if anything at the meter position or in the shared riser needs attention we will explain who is responsible for it, whether that is the freeholder, the managing agent or UK Power Networks. The whole flat is then tested and certified.
It can. Modern RCD and RCBO protection is far more sensitive than old fuses, so a circuit with a hidden fault or poor insulation may trip once it is on a new board. That is why we test every circuit before and during the change. If something fails, we tell you what it is and what it would cost to put right before we go any further, so there are no surprises.
Not always. Many harbour homes are recent enough to have RCD protected boards already, but some lack a spare way, surge protection or the capacity for a charger circuit. We look at the board, the main fuse and the earthing arrangement, then tell you whether the existing unit can take it or whether a board change makes more sense. A photo by text is a good starting point.
Yes. Most board changes take 4 to 6 hours and the power is off for most of that time, so we agree a date with you and your tenant in advance. We can collect keys from your letting agent, and the Electrical Installation Certificate is emailed within 48 hours so you have it on file for your next EICR or inspection.
Eastbourne Borough Council is the local authority, but you do not need to contact them. As a Part P registered contractor we notify the work to Building Control ourselves, and you receive the compliance certificate by post afterwards. Keep it with your Electrical Installation Certificate, as both are useful when you sell or remortgage.
