Fuse Box Replacement in Lower Willingdon

Lower Willingdon is the suburban side of the parish, just south of Polegate, where most homes date from after the war. A good number will have had their fuse box swapped once already, often for a plastic consumer unit that now falls short of current standards. We replace those at fixed prices.

Estate homes on their second board

Lower Willingdon is mostly family houses and bungalows on roads and closes laid out in the second half of the twentieth century. Their electrics have often been updated once already. The giveaway is a plastic consumer unit with a row of miniature circuit breakers and a single RCD, or none at all.

A board with no RCD leaves sockets and lighting without the extra shock protection an RCD gives. A single RCD covering every circuit means one faulty appliance can black out the whole house. Either way, the fix is a 12 way high integrity board for £575, or full RCBO protection starting at £625, and the wiring is tested before anything changes.

Why a plastic consumer unit is now out of date

Since January 2016, the wiring regulations have required consumer units in homes to be housed in a non-combustible enclosure, usually steel. The change followed fires that started in or around plastic units, often because of loose connections. Existing plastic boards were not banned, but any home with one is running on equipment that would not be fitted today.

On its own, a plastic board is not a reason to panic, and an EICR will not automatically fail it. But if yours also lacks RCD protection, shows scorching or has a cracked case, replacement makes sense. If you are selling or letting, an EICR alongside a new board costs £99; on its own it is £175 to £350.

  • Steel enclosures as standard
  • Scorched or cracked cases replaced
  • EICR £99 with a new board
  • Standalone EICR £175 to £350

Look at the case around the breakers. Older boards are usually moulded plastic with a hinged plastic flap, while units fitted since 2016 have a metal enclosure, often painted white. If you cannot tell, a photo sent by text settles it, and we can usually date the board roughly from it too.

A surveyor will often note an older board and recommend an electrical inspection. Having an EICR done, and replacing the board if it needs it, gives buyers paperwork rather than a question mark. Booked alongside a new board, the EICR costs £99, and the Electrical Installation Certificate reaches your inbox within 48 hours, ready to pass to your solicitor.

For many homes, yes. A high integrity board uses two RCDs plus some circuits on individual RCBOs, so essentials like a fridge freezer or alarm can sit on their own protection. Our 12 way version is £575. Going further still, full RCBO puts every circuit on its own device, starting at £625.
