Small hamlet, rural supply

Fuse Box Replacement in Nyton

Nyton is one of several small settlements that make up Aldingbourne parish, lying close to Westergate and north of Felpham. Out here a fuse box change is as much about the supply and earthing as the board itself, so we check both before fitting a new metal consumer unit.

A hamlet's houses

Country homes with their own quirks

With only a small number of homes, Nyton has no single type of house. Expect individual properties in their own plots, some extended, some with outbuildings, each with a board that reflects its own history. So before we quote, it really helps to see pictures of the fuse box, the meter and the supply cable coming into the house.

From those photos we can usually see the earthing arrangement, the main fuse and how many circuits you have. Most homes of this kind need 6 to 10 ways, priced from £425 for dual RCD, with RCBO boards from £625 if you would like each circuit protected separately.

TT earthing on rural supplies

Away from the main roads, some homes take their supply from overhead lines, and if UK Power Networks provides no earth terminal, the house depends on its own earth rod sunk into the soil. This is a TT system. It is safe only if the rod is in good condition and every circuit is protected by an RCD that will disconnect quickly when a fault occurs.

At each TT property we take a reading of the earth electrode's resistance, inspect the rod and its connection, and pick a board layout to suit, often RCBOs so a single fault cannot black out the whole house. If the rod is missing or failing, we tell you and price a replacement.

  • Earth electrode resistance measured
  • Rod and clamp inspected
  • RCD protection on every circuit
  • Overhead service checked by eye

Start at the meter position. On a TT supply the network cut-out has no earth terminal of its own, and instead a green and yellow conductor heads off through the wall to a rod outside, sometimes under a small inspection cover. A clear photo of that area is usually enough for us to say, and on the day we measure it to be certain.

It might not be. Flicker that follows the wind often points to the overhead supply, which belongs to UK Power Networks and can be reported by calling 105. A loose connection in the board or meter tails can cause flicker too, though, so if the supply checks out, send us a photo and we will look at the house side.

On a TT system the fault path runs back through the ground, which has far higher resistance than a metal conductor. A fault may not draw enough current to blow a fuse or trip a circuit breaker, so it could sit there live. An RCD senses the leakage itself and disconnects within a fraction of a second, which is why every circuit needs one.
