Ticehurst housing, old and new

The centre of Ticehurst has older buildings, while later twentieth century houses and newer homes sit further out. That range shows up inside the meter cupboard: we can expect anything from rewireable fuses in an older cottage to an early plastic consumer unit in a 1980s house.

A replacement board is priced on the number of ways you need, not the age of the house. £425 covers a dual RCD board with 6 ways, and for homes that need more circuits without a big jump in cost, a high integrity dual RCD board with 12 ways is £575.

Arc fault detection for timber and old fabric

Older buildings often have timber framing, timber floors and cables that have been in place for decades, sometimes running through voids nobody has opened in years. Arc fault detection devices, or AFDDs, watch for the electrical signature of a loose connection or damaged cable that has started to arc, a kind of fault that ordinary breakers and RCDs are not designed to catch.

The current wiring regulations recommend AFDDs for many installations, and they make particular sense in an older Ticehurst home. A 10 way RCBO board with AFDDs is £1,095, and 14 ways is £1,295. If your home is listed, check with Rother District Council before any new cable routes are cut.

Getting to you

From Brighton to Ticehurst

Ticehurst lies in the north of East Sussex close to the Kent border. Heathfield and Wadhurst are on our way up, and the journey adds nothing to your bill. Most jobs are booked from a photo quote a few days ahead. No power at all and a board that will not reset means you should ring us straight away; our target is to get there that day.

Replacing a consumer unit in the same position is not usually the sort of change that needs listed building consent, but new cable routes, chasing walls or fixing to historic features may be. If your home is listed, it is sensible to check with Rother District Council's conservation team first. We keep new runs discreet and talk the route through with you.

It monitors the current on a circuit for the pattern produced by arcing, the small repeated sparks from a loose terminal, a nail through a cable or a worn flex. When it recognises that pattern, it switches the circuit off. RCDs and breakers respond to different faults, so an AFDD adds a layer of fire protection they cannot provide.

Modern consumer units are often larger than the fuse box they replace, especially with RCBOs and surge protection. Send a photo with something in it for scale and we will check. If the space is too tight, moving the board at the same time as replacing it adds £250, and we will suggest a sensible new position.
