A village on the A267

Fuse Box Replacement in Five Ashes

Five Ashes sits on the A267 between Heathfield and Mayfield, a village in its own right within the joint parish of Mayfield and Five Ashes. Old fuse boxes in the village are swapped for modern consumer units on a fixed price basis, and each new board is planned around the heating changes many rural homes are now making.

Five Ashes homes and the boards inside them

Five Ashes stretches along the main road and the lanes leading off it, so the housing is a mix of older cottages, detached houses in their own plots and later twentieth century homes. Older properties may still have a wooden backed fuse board or rewireable fuses, while later houses often have an early plastic consumer unit with a single RCD covering everything.

Either way, the upgrade path is much the same. £495 covers a dual RCD board with 10 ways, while £695 buys full RCBO protection across 10 to 12 ways, the better fit for larger detached houses with more circuits. Type 2 surge protection comes with both.

  • Wooden backed boards removed
  • Rewireable fuses retired
  • Single RCD layouts split
  • Sized for larger houses

Is your board ready for an air source heat pump?

Plenty of rural homes in the High Weald have never had mains gas and still heat with oil or LPG. When that boiler reaches the end of its life, an air source heat pump is a common replacement, and it brings a sizeable new electrical load: a dedicated circuit for the outdoor unit, often an immersion heater for the cylinder, and sometimes a backup heater as well.

An old fuse box rarely has the spare ways or the protection for that. We fit a board with room for the heat pump circuits, record your main fuse size and earthing, and leave clear notes for the heating installer. If the supply itself needs upgrading, that request goes to UK Power Networks.

A heat pump needs its own protected circuit, and an installer has to connect to an installation that is safe to extend. A fuse box lacking RCD protection, or one with every way already taken, falls short of that. Changing the board first lets the heat pump connect cleanly. From £625, a full RCBO board protects each heating circuit separately.

What sets the price is the number of ways the board needs; neither the floor area nor the address changes it. A bigger home just calls for more ways, so £795 covers an RCBO board of 14 to 16 ways, and £1,295 a 14 way RCBO board with arc fault detection. Photos of your existing board tell us which size fits.

It is included on every new board we fit, at no extra cost. The Type 2 device clamps voltage spikes, whether from lightning on overhead lines or from switching on the network, before they can harm boiler controls, routers and televisions. If your board is fairly new but lacks one, we can retrofit a device for £165.
