Second generation boards in Furnace Green
Furnace Green was built as part of Crawley new town, and its homes are mostly terraced and semi detached houses with some flats. Houses of this kind usually started with a fuse box, then had a plastic consumer unit fitted during a rewire or upgrade some decades ago. That replacement is now the part that falls short.
A typical example has a main switch, one RCD covering the sockets, and lighting, cooker and immersion circuits with no RCD at all. It was acceptable when fitted. Current wiring rules expect RCD protection on almost every circuit in a home, which a new board provides.
- Split load boards replaced
- Lighting brought under RCD cover
- Metal enclosure to current rules
- Whole house tested

Why a split load board is worth replacing
With a split load board, one fault on a socket circuit can switch off every socket in the house, while a fault on an unprotected lighting circuit may not be detected at all. Neither is ideal. The plastic casing of these older units is also no longer accepted for new domestic boards, which must now be made of non combustible material.
There are two routes. The first, costing from £425 for 6 ways or £495 for 10, is a dual RCD board that shares the circuits between two RCDs. The second, full RCBO from £625, protects each circuit individually, so a single fault only ever switches off the circuit it is on. We explain the difference with your home in mind.
- Dual RCD 6 way £425
- Dual RCD 10 way £495
- Full RCBO 8 way £625
- One fault, one circuit off

Asked in Furnace Green
Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.
Call 0333 360 8691If it is a single RCD covering only the sockets, part of the house is unprotected and one fault can still knock out a lot of circuits. Testing sometimes shows an old RCD trips too slowly as well. A new board protects every circuit and adds surge protection, which older units lack. A photo is enough for an honest verdict on whether it is worth doing.
An RCD watches a group of circuits for current leaking to earth and switches them all off when it detects a fault. An RCBO does the same job for a single circuit and also acts as that circuit's breaker. With RCBOs, a faulty kettle trips only the circuit it is plugged into, rather than half the house.
Yes. If you are planning a charger, tell us when you book. We can choose a board with a spare way suitable for the charger circuit, although some charger installers prefer a separate small unit. Either way, we note the rating of your main fuse and the earthing arrangement, which the charger installer will need to know.
