A few homes, many ages

Small hamlet, mixed housing

A hamlet this size is a scattering of homes rather than a planned street, and they rarely share a building date. One cottage may have been rewired in the 1970s, another updated piecemeal since, a third extended in the last decade. Fuse boards follow the same pattern, so we never assume. We look at your board, the cable sizes and what each circuit feeds before recommending anything.

A modest cottage can often manage with six ways under dual RCD protection, which costs from £425. Bigger or extended houses are usually better served by 10 ways at £495, or by a 12 way high integrity board at £575 that shares the circuits among more RCDs, so a single trip leaves more of the house running.

  • No assumptions about wiring age
  • Circuits counted before quoting
  • Board sized with spare ways
  • Old cables checked for condition

Which earthing system does your home have?

On the edge of a town, supplies can go either way. Some homes take an earth from the network, usually a PME arrangement described as TN-C-S, while others rely on their own earth rod, known as TT. The difference changes how the new board must be protected and what extra rules apply if you later add an EV charger or an outside supply.

We confirm the system on site rather than guessing from the postcode, then test it properly: earth loop impedance for a network earth, electrode resistance for a rod. Both are recorded on the certificate we email within 48 hours, which is useful if you sell the house or add new equipment later.

  • Earthing type confirmed on site
  • Main bonding to gas and water checked
  • PME rules for EV chargers explained
  • Results recorded on the certificate

Flathurst questions

Asked in Flathurst

Still not sure?

Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.

Call 0333 360 8691

Look near the meter. A network earth usually shows as a green and yellow cable connected to the supply cable or to a terminal on the cut out, sometimes with a PME label. A TT home has no earth from the cut out; instead an earth cable leaves the house to a rod in the ground. A photo of that area helps us tell.

No, but it changes how the charger is installed. The wiring regulations require extra measures on PME supplies for chargers used outdoors, often built into the charger itself or provided with a separate earth rod. When we fit your board we can leave a spare way and tell the charger installer exactly what earthing you have.

It is more likely than for remote corners of the county, but it still depends on the day's bookings. For emergencies such as no power, a burning smell or a board that will not reset, call us and we will do our best to get there that day. Planned replacements are booked at a time to suit you.
