On Thorney Island, Chichester Harbour

Fuse Box Replacement in West Thorney

West Thorney is the parish covering Thorney Island in Chichester Harbour, west of Chichester and reached by a short causeway near Emsworth. Much of the island is Ministry of Defence land, so visits work a little differently here, but our fixed prices and testing do not change.

Island housing

Who looks after the electrics in your island home?

Some of the housing on Thorney Island is service family accommodation linked to the military base, and in those homes electrical repairs and upgrades are arranged through the housing provider rather than by the person living there. If that describes your home, please report a fuse box problem through your usual maintenance route before contacting anyone else.

For any home on or near the island that you own or let privately, we quote and work exactly as we do across the rest of Sussex: photos by text, a fixed price, a full test of the installation and a certificate within 48 hours. Dual RCD boards start at £425.

Arranging entry before we set off

Access to Thorney Island is controlled because of the military presence, so a visit has to be arranged in advance. Expect to be asked for the names of the installers and the details of the van. Let us know what the current process is when you book and we will follow it to the letter, so nobody is turned away on the day.

Because of that, we set aside a whole day for island work rather than fitting it between other jobs. A board change fits that pattern neatly, since the 4 to 6 hours most of them need, full house test included, leaves no reason to rush.

Visiting West Thorney: plan ahead

West Thorney is towards the far west of our patch: past Chichester on the A27, then off towards Emsworth and down onto the island. The journey still costs nothing extra. Because entry has to be arranged first, a same day visit is harder to promise here than elsewhere, so please call as early in the day as you can.

Still not sure?

Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.

Usually not. Repairs and upgrades to service family homes are normally handled by the housing maintenance provider, and privately arranged work may not be allowed. Please check with them before booking anything. If you own your home or rent it from a private landlord, we can quote you directly from photos of the board.

Yes, as long as access is arranged beforehand. When you book, tell us what the current procedure is and whether you need to sponsor or register our visit. We will supply the installers' names and our vehicle details. Without that we could be turned back at the entrance, so please make sure it is sorted before the day.

Yes. AFDDs watch for the electrical signature of arcing from a damaged cable or loose connection, a common starting point for electrical fires, and switch the circuit off. We fit them on RCBO boards: a 10 way RCBO and AFDD board is £1,095 and a 14 way is £1,295. We can advise whether they are worth it for your home.
