Older buildings call for careful work
Brightling is a parish of scattered farms, cottages and larger period houses, and several of its buildings are listed. In older homes like these, a board change has to respect the building: cable routes chosen with care, no unnecessary chasing of old walls, and the new board placed where the old one was, or somewhere better if the meter position allows.
If your home is listed and you would like the board moved, we talk it through first, because relocation can touch historic fabric. A straight swap in the same position avoids most of that. Where moving the board does make sense, it is £250 on top of the new board.
- Board kept in place where possible
- Relocation discussed before any work
- Neat, minimal cable runs
- Every circuit tested and certified

Why surge protection matters on an exposed ridge
Brightling stands high in the Weald, and some rural supplies in the area may arrive on overhead lines. Overhead networks are more exposed to brief voltage spikes, from lightning strikes nearby and from switching on the network. A surge lasting a fraction of a second can damage boiler controls, routers, televisions and the electronics inside modern appliances.
Type 2 surge protection comes built into each new board we install, at no added cost. If you would rather keep your existing board and it is in good order, a surge protection retrofit costs £165. We test the earthing at the same time, because a surge device relies on a sound earth to do its job.
- Type 2 surge protection on every board
- Retrofit option at £165
- Earthing tested before fitting
- Shields boilers and electronics
On our way to Brightling
Hilltop Brightling makes for a proper country drive from Brighton & Hove. We approach along the lanes from the Burwash and Heathfield side or up from Battle, whichever suits the day, and allow for narrow roads when we give you an arrival time. Photos of the board earn you a fixed quote before we set out, and urgent problems can be phoned through, with help often arriving the same day.

Asked in Brightling
Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.
Call 0333 360 8691Swapping a board in the same position, using the existing cable routes, does not usually need listed building consent. Moving the board or running new cables through historic walls might. If you are unsure, ask the conservation team at Rother District Council before we start. We keep alterations to a minimum either way and will describe exactly what we plan to do.
If your board was fitted in recent years it may already have it; a photo will tell us. If not, and the board is in good condition with space for the device, a retrofit costs £165 and protects everything plugged in from brief spikes. Where the board has no room, or is older, a replacement with surge protection built in is the better route.
Usually not. If neighbours are off too, it is a network fault for UK Power Networks; call 105 to report it. If only your home is dark and the main switch or an RCD has tripped, the problem is likely inside the property. A few photos and a short description are usually enough for us to say which one you are dealing with.
