Many were later given a split load consumer unit, where one RCD guards the sockets and the lighting has none, or one RCD covers almost everything. An RCD that trips at random, often in wet weather or when a certain appliance switches on, is a frequent complaint in houses of this age. With older wiring and one RCD guarding many circuits, small leakages add up until it trips, and the culprit is hard to pin down. Fitting a new board without finding the cause does not cure it.
Before swapping the board we test the insulation of every circuit, which usually reveals the problem: an outdoor socket, a damp light fitting or a tired immersion heater. We put right what we find, or explain the cost first. On the new RCBO board, any later fault trips only its own circuit.

It is still worth having tested, because a growing fault can leave you without power at a bad moment, or point to a cable that is deteriorating.
A dual RCD board splits the circuits into two groups, each behind one RCD, so a fault switches off a whole group. A full RCBO board gives every circuit its own combined breaker and RCD, so only the faulty circuit goes off. Dual RCD boards start at £425 and full RCBO boards at £625 for 8 ways. For a busy family home with lots of circuits, we would usually suggest RCBO.
