Rural homes, modern demands

Country houses with town-sized loads

As a hamlet, Brook Street has only a modest number of homes, typically individual houses and cottages, some extended and some with outbuildings. Their electrical needs have grown just like any town house, with induction hobs, home offices, power showers and electric heating, but the board in the cupboard has not always kept pace with all of that.

When a board is crowded with add-ons or too small for modern use, we replace it with one sized properly for the house, leaving a couple of spare ways. Prices begin at £495 for ten ways split across two RCDs, or £625 if every circuit gets its own RCBO.

  • Spare ways left for the future

Spikes on the line and what they break

Rural homes are more likely to be fed by overhead lines, which are exposed to nearby lightning and to switching surges on the network. A sudden spike can damage the electronics now built into almost everything, from boilers and heating controls to televisions, routers and alarm panels, often with no visible sign until the device simply stops working.

The price of any board we install already covers Type 2 surge protection. If your existing consumer unit is fairly recent and does not need replacing, we can retrofit a surge protection device for £165, provided there is space and the board is in good condition.

  • Type 2 surge protection included
  • Retrofit option at £165
  • Protects boilers and electronics
  • Fitted to BS 7671 requirements

It is a module fitted inside the consumer unit that diverts brief voltage spikes safely to earth before they reach your appliances. Type 2 devices are designed for surges arriving along the supply cable, from network switching or nearby lightning. They will not stop a direct strike, but they protect electronics from the far more common smaller events.

Often, yes. If your consumer unit is a modern type with a spare way and is in good order, we can retrofit a surge protection device for £165. If the board is older, already full or damaged, replacing it is usually the better value, because surge protection then comes included in the board price.

Anything that loses power may need attention afterwards, such as clocks, alarm panels, smart hubs and some boiler controls. Alarm systems usually have a backup battery, but keep your alarm code to hand in case it sounds. We switch everything back on and check each circuit works, then leave you to reset clocks and timers.
